Recycling
Garbage workers, especially scavengers, are the main pillars of the recycling system in Indonesia, which is still dominated by the informal sector.
Strengthening support for them is an important part of building a more organized, inclusive, and sustainable waste management system, while also opening up opportunities for empowerment models to be applied in various other informal sectors.
Our approach
Improved Waste Collection
Mahija strengthens the quality and consistency of PET collection in Indonesia by working directly with field partners that we refer to as Collection Centers (CC). Our focus is to ensure that materials are collected safely, neatly, and meet bottle-to-bottle recycling standards.

The Collection Center network contributes to the collection of tens of thousands of tons of PET per year, ensuring that valuable materials remain in the recycling chain and do not end up in landfills.

Empowered Waste Workers
Behind the flow of PET entering recycling plants are thousands of informal workers, ranging from street vendors, whom we refer to as Collection Partners, to scavengers who play a role in keeping the recycling chain running. They are an important part of the PET collection ecosystem, but these workers often work without protection, recognition, or basic access.
Therefore, Mahija not only strengthens the collection system, but also ensures that the workers involved remain protected and have opportunities for development. Through the Empowered Waste Workers pillar, we assist waste pickers, Collection Partner workers, and their families in gaining access to identity, basic health care, a safer working environment, and learning opportunities. This approach is divided into three main areas designed to address the most basic needs of the PET collection community.

Our approach
Enabling Partnership
Connecting governments, industries, communities, and field partners to strengthen PET collection while encouraging collaboration in informal worker empowerment programs.
Cooperation
Strategic
We work with other organizations and industry players to develop joint initiatives, ranging from strengthening PET collection to economic and social programs for informal workers. These collaborations include projects such as the Responsible Sourcing Initiative (RSI) with The Circulate Initiative (TCI) and a community entrepreneurship program for waste pickers with CARE Indonesia.
Public Involvement & Waste Education
We encourage community participation through environmental education and recycling campaigns, through initiatives such as KOLASTIK (Plastic Recycling Collaboration) which involves schools, communities, and health facilities. These efforts have also resulted in measurable community-driven collection, including more than 362,900 PET bottles collected.
Volunteering & Donations
We open up opportunities for companies and communities to contribute through volunteer activities and donations, especially in supporting education and activities for children and families of informal workers, including through Mahija Mobile School.
