About Us
Mahija is a foundation that works at the most crucial point in PET recycling in Indonesia: collection.
We serve as a bridge between informal workers and an increasingly organized waste management system. Through social, technical, and cross-sector partnership approaches, Mahija ensures that the PET collection process is safer, more organized, and more inclusive.
Mahija was established in 2020 through industry collaboration to strengthen the PET collection chain in Indonesia. Together with its recycling plant partners, Mahija ensures that post-consumer PET is properly collected and responsibly recycled, primarily through a bottle-to-bottle process that turns PET bottles into new bottles.
As the national recycling ecosystem develops, Mahija continues to build collaborations with the government, communities, informal workers, and various other stakeholders.

Our Work Focus
We work through three main approaches:

Improved Waste Collection
We improve the quality and consistency of PET collection by strengthening the collection network. Through coaching, mentoring, and standardizing work practices, collected PET can be recycled into new bottles, reducing the burden on landfills and supporting the circular economy.

Empowered Waste Workers
We assist waste pickers and informal workers by providing access to identity documents, basic healthcare, labor protection, and capacity building. The goal is simple: to ensure they remain protected, recognized, and have opportunities to thrive within the system.

Enabling Partnerships

Our Work Foundation
Indonesia produces millions of tons of waste every year, and most of the sorting and collection of valuable materials is carried out by the informal sector. However, much of this material is ultimately lost before it can be recycled due to a management system that is not yet fully organized and varying standards of practice.
At the same time, the scavengers who carry out most of this work often do not receive adequate protection, working standards, or recognition.
We believe that system improvements should not ignore them. If Indonesia wants to have more organized, secure, and sustainable waste collection, then the people who keep the recycling chain running need to be protected and empowered in the process.
