About the Program
Mahija is committed to improving the health of waste workers, particularly waste pickers, who play a vital role in the recycling system and the circular economy.
Through the Free Basic Health Screening program under the Semangat Sehat Mahija initiative, we provide health screening services to detect high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high uric acid levels, and other non-communicable diseases among waste management workers in the areas supported by Mahija. In addition to health screenings, this program also includes the distribution of basic food supplies and medications as a tangible form of support for these workers.
Since its launch in 2022, this program has been met with great enthusiasm from waste workers, including those at Collection Centers, Collection Partners, and waste pickers. This initiative is part of Mahija’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the importance of health and safety in the recycling sector.

Recipients of the Mahija Health Screening
Sri Wulandari is a housewife who lives in Kutruk Village, Tigaraksa. Her family’s income is about 500,000 rupiah per month. To help cover daily expenses, she also collects used bottles from her home to resell.
Previously, Sri rarely went for checkups. Even though she had BPJS, the long lines at the community health center often caused her to put off her appointments. As a result, her health wasn’t always well monitored.
Since participating in Mahija’s Free Health Checkup program, Sri has been getting regular checkups every six months. During one of these checkups, she learned that her cholesterol level was nearly 238. She was then prescribed medication and received health counseling to help manage her condition.

After following the advice given, her health gradually improved and her cholesterol levels returned to normal. For Sri, this initiative was very helpful because it allowed her to detect health issues early on and prevent them from becoming more serious.
“Thanks to these health checkups, I’m able to monitor my health on a regular basis. That way, if there’s an illness, it can be detected early and prevented.”
