Informal School Support

Mahija parahita nusantara Foundation

About the Program

Not all children from families of waste workers have consistent access to formal education. Various constraints—ranging from economic conditions and family mobility to administrative hurdles—mean that some children rely more on alternative schools and informal learning spaces that have emerged from community initiatives.

Through its Informal School Support Program, Mahija focuses on strengthening existing educational initiatives in the community, rather than replacing them. Many informal schools were established in response to disparities in access to education, but they often face challenges in terms of resources, facilities, and program sustainability.

Mahija serves as a supporting partner by providing assistance tailored to on-the-ground needs, ranging from the provision of learning resources and limited operational support to mentoring aimed at strengthening the capacity of managers and volunteers. This approach ensures that the learning ecosystem, which has earned the community’s trust, can continue to operate and grow more sustainably.
