Young Generation Cares for Waste with Mahija

Fulfilling basic rights for most waste pickers is an ongoing process that requires support and coordination across strategic partners. Therefore, Mahija had the opportunity to discuss with the Deputy Head of the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and his staff, with the aim of exploring an inclusive-collaborative approach to the provision of population documents, which is an essential prerequisite for the fulfillment of basic health and education rights.

On this occasion, Mahija requested support and recommendations to accelerate the facilitation of the procurement of population documents, especially ID cards. BPS stated that it was ready to fully support, and immediately connected Mahija with the Poverty Alleviation Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin).

The meeting with BP Taskin gave Mahija optimism regarding the implementation of the civil registration document facilitation, which is expected to take place in the near future. BP Taskin indicated that, in line with the President's mandate, the government would support this initiative as part of its poverty alleviation strategy. Mahija itself has collected data from 594 waste pickers who do not have the necessary legal identity documents, including KTP, Family Card, Adult Birth Certificate, BPJS/KIS, and Child Birth Certificate. Furthermore, BP Taskin also showed interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the Mahija Mobile School during the meeting, recognizing its potential to contribute to the development of Sekolah Rakyat.
